Case name: 2021_08_04-CM528

Situation: 40 people departed from Sfax, the boat shipwrecked with 6 survivers, while 34 died

Status of WTM Investigation: concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Case:

On the 4th of August 2021 at 00:55 CEST the Alarm Phone hotline was called by a relative. The caller informed us about a boat at sea. Accordingly, 40 people were onboard, they started from Sfax 24 hours ago. Unfortunately no GPS position was known. We nevertheless informed the Italian and Tunisian coast guard and the NGOs Pilotes Volontaires and Sea-Watch. Throughout the night we called the telephone numbers of the travellers without success.

In the morning and evening we called Tunisian coast guard who reported to not have rescued any boat but will continue to search.

The next day it will turn out that the ship drowned and only 6 people survived.
