Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean
Summary On Saturday the 10th of July 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 45 travellers, 30 men, 14 women and one child, who were in distress in the Atlantic. The travellers had left from Laayoune at 03.00 CEST on a green rubber boat and were heading towards the Canary Islands. We were never able to establish direct contact to the travellers. At 16.55 CEST we called the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo and forwarded all the information we had, first by phone and shortly after via email. Although we never managed to reach the travellers despite many attempts, in the late evening we learned that they had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and brought to Las Palmas.
