Situation: 88 people, among them 73 men and 15 children, started from Sabratha, Libya, and reached Lampedusa
Status of WTM Investigation: concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean Sea
Summary of the Case:
On the 11th of June 2021 at 11:31 CEST the Alarm Phone received a call from a satellite phone. The person is onboard a boat in distress. The 88 travellers had left Sabratha 11 hours ago on a blue boat. Onboard were people from Sudan, Egypt and Bangladesh. The communication was difficult but we got the GPS position at 12:10 CEST, which showed the location in Tunisian search and rescue zone. We informed the Tunisian, Italian and Maltese coast guards, as well as the so-called Libyan coast guard, the NGOs Sea-Watch and Pilotes Volontaires and the NGO vessel Geo Barents at 12:42 CEST. In the afternoon we phoned with the Tunisian coast guards which reported to have sighted a boat but would not intervene. The day ended without further contact to the travellers. On 12th June we learned that the boat had reached Lampedusa.
