Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 3rd of January 2017

Case name: 2017_01_03-CM96
Situation: 53 travellers in distress between Greece and Italy, rescued by the Italian coast guard
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Ioanian Sea

Summary of the Cases: On Tuesday, the 3rd of January 2017 at 5.21am the Alarm Phone was called by a group of 53 travellers in distress on their way from Greece to Italy. The call was interrupted before we could get any information about the location of the vessel. At 5.56am we managed to re-establish contact to the boat, and were informed that they had been travelling for more than 30 hours, and that amongst the 53 people were 12 children. Our shift team explained how to send the position of the vessel via Viber, and at 6.12am we received their position, showing that they were close to Porto Badisco. We called the Italian coast guard and passed on the information we had, and they informed us that they were already approaching the boat to carry out the rescue operation. At 6.20am we received a confirmation from the travellers that the rescue vessel had arrived.
