Summary of the Case:
On Saturday, 12th of May, at 2:07pm CET, we got alerted by Father Mussie Zerai to a boat in distress from al-Khums / Libya, carrying 84 persons. We didn’t manage to establish a phone connection to the travellers. At 2:21pm Father Zerai forwarded us the GPS position of the boat. At 2:38pm we called the Maritime Rescue Coordination Center (MRCC) in Rome, that informed us that the boat had already been spotted by an aircraft. We wrote an email to the respective authorities to document the alert. In the next two hours, we called MRCC Rome several times for updates, but didn’t receive any information. We still couldn’t establish a direct contact to the boat. At 4:20pm, a contact person called the Alarm Phone about the same case and informed us that the boat had not been rescued yet. At At 5:15pm MRCC Rome confirmed the rescue of the boat.
