Summary of the case: on 28th June, Alarmphone was contacted by a relative of one of the passengers of a fishing vessel departed from Akkar, Lebanon, five days before. We learned later that the fishing vessel has been found in distress in the waters southeast of Karpathos, in the Aegean sea; the people in distress have been transferred on the cargo ship FREEDOM LINE (IMO: 9284245) and disembarked in the island of Kos in the morning of 29th June, after a SAR operation coordinated by the Hellenic Coast Guard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
