Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 6th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 76 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Through the relative we got their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Only two days later did we managed to reach the travellers. They told us that they had no more food and water and that a pregnant woman onboard was in a critical state. We stayed in contact with the boat and relayed updates to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Louise Michel.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
