Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 24th May 2024Case name: 2024_05_24-CM130
Situation: 45 travellers in distress in the Central Med, arrived to Sicily.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 24th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 45 travellers, including 10 women and some children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Misrata, Libya. They told us that they had no food and drinking water left and that several people onboard were sick. We managed to get their GPS position, showing that they were in the Maltese search and rescue zone, and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions to authorities as often as possible. As the Maltese coastguard was unwilling to tell us whether they were coordinating a search and rescue operation, we also reached out to companies of nearby merchant vessel, alerting them to the situation and reminding them of their duty to assist boats in distress. Unfortunately, this was likewise ignored. Later, we learned that the travellers had arrived to Sicily.
