Summary of the case: On Sunday the 13th of October 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 12 travellers in distress in the Western Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Al Hoceima, heading towards Motril. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued by Salvamento Maritimo and had arrived to Motril.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
