Summary of the Case: On the 6th of June, a relative alerted the Alarm Phone shift team to a boat in distress in the Atlantic Ocean. The group of 58 travellers, including two women and one child, had left Tan Tan, Morocco, on the 5th of June in a plastic boat in direction of Lanzarote. The shift team managed to reach the travellers. We learned that their engine was not working anymore and got their GPS-position, and forwarded the alert and information about the boat to Spanish and Moroccan search and rescue authorities. Soon after, the Moroccan authorities confirmed that a patrol boat has left in direction of the boat in distress. The next morning, the shift team got the information that the boat had been returned to Morocco.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
