Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 17th of November 2020
Case name: 2019_11_17-WM530
Situation: 3 people on a jet ski arrive in Almeria
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of the Case:
Just after 22:00h CET on the 17 November, we received a call from someone looking for
information about his relative who had left from Ras Ima on a jet ski three days previously. The relative was part of a group 3 people but nobody had any news about their whereabouts whether or not they were alive.
We phoned Salvamento Maritimo, Guardia Civil, and the Policia Nacional in Almeria, but
nobody would give us any information. In working hours the next day, we tried again and we also made contact with the Red Cross. Our enquiries returned a blank.

On 19 November, we resumed our endeavours. We tried emailing the headquarters of Salvamento Maritimo, Guardia Civil and the UNHCR in Spain. We received no reply. We messaged the target=”_blank”>Heroes Del Mar Twitter feed because they had announced a rescue. We are happy to learn about the rescue, but it was of a different group of people trying the same method of crossing.

We also contacted the NGO CIPIMED. At about 19:00 they were able to tell us that the individuals had arrived in Almeria, were in
detention and would within 48 hours. Boza. That the authorities feel the need to refuse to provide information to worried relatives
remains a disgrace.
