Summary of the Case: In the late afternoon of Sunday the 18th of August the Alarm Phone was called by a traveller on a boat in distress carrying 7 people. The boat was a zodiac with no motor and had departed from near Tangier. They could see ships in the distance but no land. Soon after, they called us back and told us that they had been intercepted by the Moroccan navy and were being brought back to Morocco.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
