Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations – 3rd August 2022

Case name: 2022_08_03-WM038

Situation: 22 travellers in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar, returned to Morocco by themselves.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Western Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 3rd of August 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 22 travellers in distress in the Strait of Gibraltar. The travellers had left from around Tangier the previous evening at around 20.00 local time on a rubber boat. The relative told us that the travellers were drifting as their engine was no longer working and that water was entering the boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers and get their GPS position, but alerted the Spanish search and rescue organisation Salvamento Maritimo as well as the Moroccan search and rescue authorities to the distress situation. Not long after, we learned from the relative that the travellers had managed to return to the coast of Morocco by themselves and that they were now with the Moroccan military.
