Summary of the case: On Sunday the 8th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers were panicking and communication was therefore very difficult. We managed to get there GPS position but were not able to get other information. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying the position we had received.
We never established contact to the travellers again and were not able to find out what happened to them.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
