Summary of the case: On Sunday the 8th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 30 travellers, including five women and several minors, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya the previous evening on a white fiberglass boat. They were adrift as they had no more fuel left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We passed on updated positions to the authorities as often as possible as well as information about the deteriorating situation onboard. Later, we learned that the travellers most likely had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
