Summary of the case: On Saturday the 7th of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 20 travellers, including four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Al Khoms, Libya, on a wooden boat. They told us that they were adrift and that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. We lost contact to the travellers and were never able to find out what happened to them.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
