Situation: 18 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued to Lampedusa by the Italian coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 2nd of September 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 18 travellers, including one pregnant woman and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli, Libya, the previous evening on a blue wooden boat. They told us that the waves were high, that they had no more food and drinking water left and that they were almost out of fuel. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and could hear that the situation was deteriorating as their boat started to take in water and people were getting sick. We relayed updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned from a relative that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa.
