Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 12th of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by relatives to a group of around 40 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya the previous day at around midnight on a blue wooden boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat but received their GPS position from a relative. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later in the afternoon we managed to reach the travellers. We could hear on the phone that they were panicking and they told us that waves were high. Throughout the evening we regularly relayed updated positions of the boat to the authorities. In the early hours of the morning, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been rescued and were all safe.

Border police patrols
