Summary of the case: On Thursday the 29th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 30 travellers, including three children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They told us that they had been at sea for four days on a wooden boat and that they had no more food and drinking water left and had also run out of fuel. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We later learned that a boat matching the description we had received had arrived to the port of Augusta, Sicily.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
