Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 7th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 40 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Misratha, Libya, on the 5th of August on a wooden boat. They told us that water was entering their boat and that several of them were sick. They had no more food and drinking water left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on updates from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
