Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 27th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 53 travellers, including one woman and one baby, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a black rubber boat and reported that water was entering their vessel. They told us that they were almost out of fuel and that several people were in a critical health condition, requiring urgent medical attention. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
