Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 7th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 46 travellers, including 10 women and a baby, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sfax the day before around midnight on an iron boat. We were not able to reach the travellers and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the Tunisian coastguard and then deported to the desert.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
