Summary of Case In the morning of July 12th a group of eight women, one child and seven men called Alarmphone from a blue wooden boat with damaged engine, drifting off the coast of Tunisia. We alerted the Marine Rescue Coordination Centre in Tunis at 08.38 CEST. Throughout the next hours people in distress keep calling us, stating they had called authorities in Tunisia themselves many times but still no SAR boat had approached them. At 10.33 CEST the travellers informed us they had been rescued from sea and intercepted to Tunisia.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
