Summary of the case: On Monday the 5th of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 17 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya three days earlier on a white fiberglass boat. They told us that water was entering their boat and that they had no more food or drinking water left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and could hear that their situation was deteriorating as time passed and their engine stopped working, leaving them adrift. We relayed their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. During the afternoon we lost contact to the travellers. As authorities refused to give us any information about efforts to rescue the people, we additionally reached out to nearby merchant vessels. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Sicily.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets.
