Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 30th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 36 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They had been at sea for three days and were travelling on a black rubber boat. They told us that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on information from the boat to the authorities as often as possible. The following day we learned that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
