Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Saturday the 3rd of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 102 travellers, including six children and many women, three of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha in the morning on a rubber boat. They told us that their boat was taking in water and we could hear on the phone that they were panicking. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We then lost contact to the travellers. Later, we learned that they had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard. At least three travellers had lost their lives during the journey.
