Summary of the case: On Thursday the 1st of August 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of travellers, including 15 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara, Libya, and their engine was no longer working. The relative gave us their GPS position and we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We were never able to reach the travellers and could also not get any information from the authorities. Most likely, the travellers were intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard, though we were never able to verify this information.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
