Summary of the case: On Saturday the 27th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 41 travellers, including two women and two children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara, Libya, the previous evening. They told us that water was entering their boat and that they had no more drinking water left. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Louise Michel.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
