Summary of the case: On Monday the 22nd of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 40 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Libya four days earlier on a wooden boat, heading towards Sicily. The sea was rough and the boat was in a bad condition. The relative gave us their GPS position and we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Afterwards, we managed to reach the travellers, but due to poor connection we were not able to verify their position. Later, we learned that the travellers were rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to the port of Augusta, Sicily.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
