Summary of the case: On Monday the 15th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 16 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. Due to poor phone reception, it was difficult to obtain much information about the boat. The travellers told us that they were around 73 km from Sicily. We were not able to get their GPS position but immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Many hours later, we managed to get the GPS position of the travellers and relayed this together with updates from the boat where they were running out of food and water and needed medical assistance. The following day we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Pozzallo, Sicily.

Border police patrols
