Summary of the case: On Wednesday the 10th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 22 travellers, including several children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. They were travelling on a white fiberglass boat and told us that they were without drinking water for the past 24 hours. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that a boat matching the description we had received had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa. We therefore assume they arrived to Lampedusa, although we were not able to reach the travellers again to verify this.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
