Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Sunday the 7th of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 63 travellers, including a baby and eight women, some of them pregnant, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zawiya, Libya, in the evening of the 5th of July. They were travelling on a rubber boat and reported that they had almost no fuel left and that the boat was taking in water. We could hear on the phone that they were panicking. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded updates to the authorities as often as possible. As time passed, we could hear that the situation onboard was deteriorating. Later, we learned that the travellers had first been assisted by the NGO vessel Nadir who had stabilised the boat and evacuated the baby and its mother. Then, they were rescued by the NGO vessel Sea Eye 4.
