Summary of the case: On Monday the 1st of July 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 80 travellers, including women and children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Garabouli, Libya, on a rubber boat. According to the relative the boat was rapidly deflating and taking in a lot of water. We were not able to reach the travellers, but received their GPS position from the relative. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After this, all contact to the boat was lost. Later, we learned from the relative that the travellers had been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard. They had all been found alive, but were imprisoned upon their arrival to Tripoli.
