Case name: 2021_10_23-CM600

Situation: 59 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by NGO vessel Geo Barents.

Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded

Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Friday the 22nd of October 2021, the Alarm Phone shift team received a direct call from a group of 59 travellers, 34 men, five children and 20 women of which three were pregnant. The travellers had left from Tripoli the previous evening, and were in distress as the weather in the area was getting worse. We managed to get their GPS position, and immediately alerted all relevant search and rescue authorities. We stayed in contact with the travellers and could thus relay their updated GPS positions to the authorities, as well as inform them about the deteriorating situation onboard as travellers got sick, as they ran out of drinking water and as water started entering their boat. In the late afternoon we lost contact to the travellers. Later, we learned that they had been rescued by the NGO rescue vessel Geo Barents operated by Doctors without Borders.

Maritime area beyond and adjacent to the territorial sea in which the coastal state exercises sovereign rights for the purposes of exploring and exploiting, conserving and managing the natural resources, whether living or non-living, the seabed and its subsoil and the superjacent waters.
