Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 27th June 2024Case name: 2024_06_27-CM188
Situation: 90 travellers in distress in the Central Med, probably intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 27th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 90 travellers, including 20 women and 30 children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha, Libya, at around 2 am the day before on a blue wooden boat. The relative told us that the boat was adrift with no more drinking water, and that many people were sick and cold. We also got a GPS position from the relative and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that a boat matching the description of this group had been found empty in the area, and that the travellers had probably been intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
