Watch The Med Alarm Phone Investigations 17th June 2024Case name: 2024_06_17-CM175
Situation: 45 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by NGO vessel Mare Go.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Monday the 17th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 45 travellers, including one woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left two days earlier from around Garabouli, Libya, on a rubber boat. The relative told us that their engine was no longer working and that they were therefore drifting. We were not able to establish direct contact to the travellers but received their GPS position from some hours back from the relative. We then immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Not long after, we reached the boat and passed on their updated position to the authorities. We stayed in contact with the boat and relayed updates as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the NGO vessel Mare Go.
