Summary of the case: On Sunday the 16th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 40 travellers, all men, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left in the night from close to Tripoli on a fiberglass boat. According to the relative the engine was no longer working. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. In the afternoon, we managed to reach the travellers and passed on their updated position to the authorities. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
