Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 14th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of between 55 and 57 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Tripoli on a wooden boat and were not carrying life vests. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and passed on their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Online, we could see a merchant vessel close to the position of the travellers, however, authorities refused to inform us whether they were coordinating a rescue operation with the merchant vessel. We then lost contact to the travellers.
Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa.
