Summary of the case: On Saturday the 8th of June 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 25 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha on a wooden boat and told us that they had no more fuel left and that some people onboard were unconscious. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the civil search and rescue NGO vessel Sea Punk 1.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
