Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 27th of February 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 56 travellers, including four women and four children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha the previous evening on a wooden boat. The travellers told us that they had run out of fuel and were therefore drifting and that water was entering their boat. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and relayed their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the travellers had been rescued by the search and rescue NGO vessel Sea Eye 4.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
