Summary of the case: On Friday the 31st of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 22 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After our initial call, we lost contact to the travellers. We later learned that a boat matching the description we had received had arrived to Lampedusa. We were not able to reach the travellers again, but assume that they arrived to Lampedusa by themselves.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
