Situation: 42 travellers in distress in the Central Med, rescued by NGO vessel Nadir and brought to Lampedusa.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Thursday the 23rd of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 42 travellers, including three women and five children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha the day before in the afternoon on a blue wooden boat. We were not able to establish direct contact to the boat and did not know their GPS position. However, we immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. Later, we managed to reach the travellers and immediately passed on their GPS to the authorities. We managed to stay in contact with the travellers and relayed their updated positions to authorities as often as possible. We learned from the travellers that water was entering their boat and that none of them were wearing life vests.
Later, we learned that they had been rescued by the NGO vessel Nadir and brought to Lampedusa.
