Summary of the case: On Tuesday the 14th of May 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 24 travellers, including two babies and several families, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha the day before on a fiberglass boat. They told us that they had run out of food and drinking water and were almost out of fuel as well. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the boat and passed on their updated positions to the authorities as often as possible. Later, we learned that the NGO vessel Nadir had arrived to the boat to provide assistance and that they had then been picked up by the Italian coastguard.

Border police patrols
