Summary of the Case:

On December 3, the Alarm Phone was alerted by relatives to a boat carrying 20 people in distress near Cyprus. The viper boat had departed from Tripoli, Lebanon, on December the 1st and relatives had lost contact with the people on board. We alerted Cyprus coast guards and authorities, informing them about the people’s intention to seek asylum, and made the case public via a Tweet. On December 4, relatives informed us that the boat had arrived to Cyprus. A local organisation confirmed that the people were then in Pournara camp.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
