Summary of the Case: In the afternoon of the 10th of April 2024, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The boat had started on the evening of the 9th of April, from Sfax in Tunisia. There were 43 men who were travelling in an iron boat. The shift team did not manage to reach the travellers but immediately relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. Unfortunately, the shift team never managed to reach the people also in the next days. The fate of the travellers therefore remains unknown to this day.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
