Situation: Around 30 travellers in distress in the Central Med, intercepted by the so-called Libyan coastguard.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean
Summary of the case: On Friday the 22nd of March 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of around 30 travellers, including three children and a pregnant woman, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabratha and could at this moment see the Sabratha platform. Communication was very difficult due to poor reception, but we managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. After this, we were no longer able to reach the travellers. Later, in a call to the so-called Libyan coastguard they informed us that they had intercepted the people close to the platform.
