Summary of the case: On Thursday the 20th of January 2022, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 104 travellers, including around 17 women, some of them pregnant, and seven children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Sabrata at around 21.30 CET the previous evening on a white rubber boat. We managed to reach the travellers and got the GPS position on the boat, which we immediately forwarded to the relevant rescue authorities together with all other information we had. Later in the morning, the travellers were rescued by the NGO vessel Geo Barents operated by Doctors without Borders.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
