Summary of the case: On Thursday the 8th of February 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted to a group of 55 travellers in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from Zuwara, Libya, the previous evening on a blue wooden boat. The travellers told us that the waves were high putting them at risk of capsizing. We managed to get their GPS position and immediately alerted the relevant search and rescue authorities, relaying all the information we had. We stayed in contact with the travellers and forwarded their updated positions to authorities. In the evening we lost contact to the travellers. We then learned that a boat matching the description we had received from the travellers had arrived to Lampedusa.

Border police patrols
While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
