Case name: 2024_01_27-CM021
Situation: 49 travellers in distress in the Central Med, 43 rescued to Lampedusa and 6 returned to Libya.
Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean

Summary of the case: On Saturday the 27th of January 2024, the Alarm Phone shift team was alerted by a relative to a group of 49 travellers, including some children, in distress in the Central Mediterranean Sea. The travellers had left from in between Sabratha and Zuwara in Libya around midnight in a grey wooden boat. We managed to reach them on the phone. They were extremely panicked because of the bad weather and the high waves, and needed to be rescued. Six travellers fell into the water near Sabratha oil platform and were picked up by a merchant vessel who illegally returned them to Tripoli. The remaining 43 people were able to continue their journey and were finally rescued by the NGO vessel Humanity 1 and later transferred to a boat of the Italian coastguard and brought to Lampedusa. We are relieved that they are safe!
