Status of WTM Investigation: Concluded
Place of Incident: Central Mediterranean Sea

Summary of the Case: In the afternoon of the 10th of January, a relative alerted the Alarmphone shift team to a boat in distress in the Central Mediterranean. The grey wooden boat with 2 engines had started in the night from the 10th of January from Libya between Sabratha and Zuwara. There were between 46 and 49 people on the boat, with no woman on board. The shift team managed to reach the travellers, received their GPS positions and relayed all the information to the Italian and Maltese authorities. On the 11th of January, the boat most probably arrived to Italy according to the arrivals communicated by the authorities in Lampedusa.

  • Border police patrols

While the exact location of patrols is of course constantly changing, this line indicates the approximate boundary routinely patrolled by border guards’ naval assets. In the open sea, it usually correspond to the outer extent of the contiguous zone, the area in which “State may exercise the control necessary to prevent infringement of its customs, fiscal, immigration or sanitary laws” (UNCLOS, art. 33).
